On silence and emerging rage

I've always known that books have a silence-inducing quality. It's observable at libraries nation-wide. It wasn't until yesterday that I noticed that this quality has gone mobile.

Enjoying the particularly beautiful fall day, I forsook my bike and walked to school. Walking while reading is one of my spiritual gifts, so I began to bless the people, working through Kierkegaard.

As if they were in the presence of something holy and reverent, the people I passed on the sidewalk fell silent as they walked by me. I can hear you two conversing and then pausing at an obviously unnatural point in the discussion...why? It's not courtesy, I can sense that. Is it fear? Do you fear the book?

Your silence makes me nervous. Is that what you're trying to do, punk? Ball up and voice your objection; don't play that passive/aggressive patsy-ball with me. I was all-district in high school.

Reading while walking was one of my favorite methods of passing the time on my journey from that fabled land known as the University Park Apartments to my destination at our renowned alma mater.

Well, except for the times that Jason Ray and Frank Puglia hit me in the head with rogue tennis balls.
